It's been exceptionally cold and snowy lately. I've silently cursed myself for not teaching her to go in the yard so we could avoid long walks on blustery days and I've wished that I could get her to do it.
One morning a few days ago when the temperature was 12 degrees, I bundled us both up in anticipation of another fun filled morning stroll with Bernie sniffing every snow drift looking for the right spot to unload.
To my surprise and delight, she ambled down the steps, squatted, did her business and went back up the steps, ready to head inside. I was thrilled but I figured it was probably just a fluke and wouldn't happen again.
I was wrong.
My darling little girl has faithfully gone every day, morning and night, in the area I shoveled clear for her in front of the door. However, this morning, she decided to take her efficiency to the extreme. I had barely opened the front door when she squatted which caused me to trip over her and almost fall down the front steps.
Here she is admiring her work.
"Get in here and give me my cookie."
I guess you have to be careful what you wish for.

Too funny! She looks like she is looking at you and saying, "Don't you realize how cold it is out there?"
ReplyDeleteDogs are not as dumb as they look. In this weather, Georgia will develop foot trouble because of the cold or salt on the road and I will have to carry her home.
ReplyDeleteI also have a beagle. The beagle (Seamus) won't go outside to do his business when it rains. Luckily, I live in Southern California and that doesn't happen very often. I'm working on getting him outside, but with much the same results.

ReplyDeleteAwww, he is cute. I did the same with my dog. She would not go in the backyard, at all. However, one winter I shovelled a path so she cold go and just play but she did the squat came in and slept. Honestly. I live in her house.

ReplyDeleteAnd people say dogs aren't as discerning as cats. This is proof that they are. When it snows they look at you like they're thinking: "You expect me to squat in THIS?"

ReplyDeleteThe colder and snowier it gets, the less often the Wonder Dog wants to go out. I think that dog must have a bladder ten times bigger than mine because it's amazing how long he will hold it before he can finally be cajoled into going outside!

Bernie is smart! I am trying to teach Cinnamon to do her business at a certain spot in the yard, as there are so many brown pee-burnt spots on the grass, which looks really ugly, but she never does it at the spot which I clearly marked by framing with bricks and filling with bark chips.

ReplyDeleteAwww... that's so sweet and smart! Our dog used to do the same in winter... she was a tiny shivering Yorkie and she hated being dressed in the bright red and blue sweater we bought her for Christmas.

ReplyDeleteShe sure is a fast learner. I'm glad you don't have one of those grass (yes, real grass that grows like a chia pet) mats for people in apartments so they don't have to take them outside. It's ridiculous! They have bigger sizes for bigger dogs too. I can't imagine a St. Bernard going poop on a grass mat in the house! Eww!
