I've created a monster

I've had Bernie for almost 3 years now. I was so excited to get a dog that, from day one, I took her on walks in the morning and at night. I basically trained her to expect a long walk before she would do her business. And when we get home, she gets a cookie.

It's been exceptionally cold and snowy lately. I've silently cursed myself for not teaching her to go in the yard so we could avoid long walks on blustery days and I've wished that I could get her to do it.

One morning a few days ago when the temperature was 12 degrees, I bundled us both up in anticipation of another fun filled morning stroll with Bernie sniffing every snow drift looking for the right spot to unload.

To my surprise and delight, she ambled down the steps, squatted, did her business and went back up the steps, ready to head inside. I was thrilled but I figured it was probably just a fluke and wouldn't happen again.

I was wrong.

My darling little girl has faithfully gone every day, morning and night, in the area I shoveled clear for her in front of the door. However, this morning, she decided to take her efficiency to the extreme. I had barely opened the front door when she squatted which caused me to trip over her and almost fall down the front steps.

Here she is admiring her work.

"Get in here and give me my cookie."

I guess you have to be careful what you wish for.

  3. Too funny! She looks like she is looking at you and saying, "Don't you realize how cold it is out there?"

  4. Dogs are not as dumb as they look. In this weather, Georgia will develop foot trouble because of the cold or salt on the road and I will have to carry her home.

  5. I also have a beagle. The beagle (Seamus) won't go outside to do his business when it rains. Luckily, I live in Southern California and that doesn't happen very often. I'm working on getting him outside, but with much the same results.

Bernie is adorable. Love the beagle expressions.

  6. Awww, he is cute. I did the same with my dog. She would not go in the backyard, at all. However, one winter I shovelled a path so she cold go and just play but she did the squat came in and slept. Honestly. I live in her house.

  7. I love the pictures! If I don't shovel off the decks when it snows then our dogs will always go on the deck before wandering down to the yard! Gotta love em!

  8. I guess that's how you spell her name in her native language.

  12. And people say dogs aren't as discerning as cats. This is proof that they are. When it snows they look at you like they're thinking: "You expect me to squat in THIS?"

  13. Poor ole Bernie is feeling the wrath of winter's bite and doesn't want to deal with it anymore than we do, I am so glad I get to pee in the house!

  15. I love the shot of him "admiring his work". We all do that, don't we? No? Oh.

  16. You know she's saying 'I thought it was you that liked the walks. I'm fine on the couch thanks.'

  18. That's awfully close to the door. Next week, she might refuse to go outside altogether!

  19. Oh well, better than using the bottom shelf of my nightstand like my favorite kitty does on occasion. Maybe Bernie would like an astroturf doormat, hahameow

  20. The colder and snowier it gets, the less often the Wonder Dog wants to go out. I think that dog must have a bladder ten times bigger than mine because it's amazing how long he will hold it before he can finally be cajoled into going outside!

  21. Would you possibly teach my Basset hound that? I'll threaten her w/ moving to the freezing snow and you have Bernie talk to her.

  22. Bwhahahahahahahha!

OMG...the expression on her face is PRICELESS!

    I LOVE YOU BERNIE!

    Good girl.

    Woof!

  23. Bernie is smart! I am trying to teach Cinnamon to do her business at a certain spot in the yard, as there are so many brown pee-burnt spots on the grass, which looks really ugly, but she never does it at the spot which I clearly marked by framing with bricks and filling with bark chips.

  24. Awww... that's so sweet and smart! Our dog used to do the same in winter... she was a tiny shivering Yorkie and she hated being dressed in the bright red and blue sweater we bought her for Christmas.

  25. I'm so glad I don't have to poop outside!

  26. She sure is a fast learner. I'm glad you don't have one of those grass (yes, real grass that grows like a chia pet) mats for people in apartments so they don't have to take them outside. It's ridiculous! They have bigger sizes for bigger dogs too. I can't imagine a St. Bernard going poop on a grass mat in the house! Eww!

  27. Oh, sweet little Bernie! She's such a smarty-puppy! You simply didn't explain to her that you wanted it over and done with when it's super-cold outside, so she decided on her own.

Love the photos...she looks absolutely adorable!

    Now, where's that cookie??
