What Up Wednesday

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Just wanted to give you guys some quick updates on "what's up" this week.

As you know, the hospice that we had Mom in kicked her out last week because she didn't die. I know that sounds harsh but that's Medicare for you. We were really disappointed because she was getting exceptional care and she was so sad that she had to leave. We got her on a waiting list for their long term hospice but it's based on acuity and since her condition is stabilized, she couldn't get in.

So we were tasked with finding her a new facility. Well, actually the social worker was tasked with that but she was pretty useless so I took it upon myself to find her a place.

Luckily, I discovered that Medicare.gov has a section on their site that rates nursing homes around the country. We were seriously considering one but then realized that on a scale of 1-5, that their rating was a 1! No thanks.

Lisa and I decided on one that has a 4 out of 5 rating and is pretty close to where we both live. Unfortunately, they didn't have a suite available in their hospice unit so they put in her in a rehab wing until a bed became available. They assured us that she would get the same care as in the hospice wing.

That didn't happen so I had Lisa call and talk to the hospice director because I was far too upset and emotional and Lisa is able to discuss things in a more rational manner. Miraculously, they found a bed available in the hospice unit for her and transferred her today. I'll stop out tomorrow to check out her new digs.

Vinny's peeing again. I know! I can't understand why. The only reason that I can assume is because the weather is getting warmer and he wants to go outside. I thought that I had been cleaning it well until a friend came over a few days ago and said, "Your house smells like cat pee."

Oh no! That was my biggest fear. To top it off, I'm going to be selling my house and moving into my mother's and no one is going to buy a house that smells like cat pee. I'm torn because if he doesn't stop, he has to go. I just love him but I can't live in a pee house.

I'm anxious to start working out to relieve some stress but I still have a cough and I'm just so tired. I had a chest x-ray to see if I had pneumonia and that came back negative, so I'm not sure what it is.

Maybe it's the cat pee?

Since I'm selling my house, there are a lot of little things that need to be done. Some functional and some that will just make it more aesthetically pleasing. My house is pretty small so it's perfect for a couple or a single woman. I say single woman because I have three bedrooms but one is so small, that I converted it to a walk-in closet. That's worth the price alone!

I've enlisted the help of a hot handyman so I'm gonna be workin' it to get some discounts and I'll keep you posted.

And that's "what's up" this week.

  1. I haven't been keeping up with the cat pee saga, but I am a vet tech at an all cat hospital and might be of some help. If you want, even though most of our clients have indoor only cats, some of the recommendations the behaviorist group we work closely with might help. If you want to email me, I can send you some info-handouts we use at work that I helped write etc.
    The most common reason cats are surrendered to shelters is peeing outside the box and while he may not do this in another home, he probably would need rehab either before or after he moved out.

  2. Hi Teri,

    I think something's up with Google because I tried emailing you from your profile and I got an error. I would LOVE to read the handouts you have. My email is imkickie@sbcglobal.net

    I adopted Vinny from my mother's neighbor. They had him for three years and he was out all year but the winter. At first, I thought he was peeing because he was inside and living with a dog but he stopped after a few months and now he's started again. They said they never had issues with him peeing in the winter when they brought him in.

    I would appreciate any advice you have. Thanks!!

    I am soooooooo glad to hear that, Chrissy. Hope everything works out great for her.

    Holy cow, you've had a lot going on this week.

    Sorry to hear about Vinny peeing, but maybe Terri can give you some good advice so you won't have to let him go. I would miss seeing his cute little face on your blog, but I can TOTALLY understand because I would feel the same as you. I'll keep my fingers crossed it all works out.

  4. Hi chrissy glad you found somewhere suitable for your mum. It's hard to imagine places that are rated a 1, that anyone would have to put their older relly there. Very sad, it's hard enough as it is.

    re the cat pee, there is a spray with an enzyme in it that you can spray on the spot after you've cleaned up. It helps remove any lingering odour in the air and also removes the scent that lets the cat know to pee there again. I hope Teri can help.I had a cat that I raised from feeding with a dropper that I had to surrender when he was 3 as he was spraying all through the house out of fear of another cat in the neigbourhood,When he wasnt spraying he was sitting in one spot "on guard" :(

    I hate selling have done it 4 times ,and theres always something to fix, that we put up with but no one else will lol

    good luck with the hot handyman :)

  5. The pee and cat dander is probably making you sick. The smell will be noticed by potential buyers.
    I would unconvert the closet back into a bedroom. Three bedrooms sells better then 2. all the best.

  8. @Ron,
    UGH! He peed on the couch while Bernie and I were upstairs. One more shot with Feliway and then he's gone. I just can't do this. :-(

    @IWASNTBLOGGEDYESTERDAY,
    I've tried enzymes, I bought a pet steam cleaner, I just don't know why he's doing this.

    You're right about us putting up with things a buyer wouldn't! lol

    @R. Jacob,
    You're probably right about the bedroom. I think I can probably use all the pieces parts at my mom's if I knock out the dividing wall between the his and her closets in the master.

    @Anonymous,
    Who? Vinny??

    @Phillipia,
    He's actually trying to start a side business!

    Thanks. I went to see Mom tonight and it's WAY better than where she was. I'll sleep good tonight. With my cough syrup with codeine, of course. ;-)

  9. I wonder if Vinny is picking up on how stressed you are, so he thinks he should be stressed out too, thus the peeing?

  10. @Crystal,
    Oh my gosh. I never thought of that! I wonder if that's possible...Thanks, I'll have to look into it.
